The Art and Science of Musical Memory 
The ability to transcend the limitations of memory has long since captured the public's imagination: the chess grandmaster's apparent ease at replaying a three-hour match move-for-move, the expert mathematician's unhesitating recitation of complex formulae, the concert pianist's facility at performing Bach's Goldberg Variations without reference to the printed page. This paper will explore this apparent art of memory and, in particular, the art of musical memory. Current theories that account for exceptional memory abilities will be reviewed and the findings of recent scientific investigations of these theories in music will be presented and discussed.
